- Apple Mac CompatibilityFrequently Asked Questions (Scanners)
ADF (Automatic Document Feeder) or Sheet-fed Scanners are ideal for scanning batches of documents fast & efficiently as it automatically scans each document placed in the scanner. Most ADF Scanners can scan both sides on the same pass (duplex).
Flatbed scanners are ideal for single sided, fragile, photo or bound documents.
PDF: (Portable Document Format) A universal file type created by Adobe that preserves a document's layout, fonts, and images exactly as intended, regardless of the device, software, or operating system used to view it.
JPG / JPEG: (Joint Photographic Experts Group) A widely used digital image format globally, designed to efficiently compress high-quality photographs and graphics into smaller, easily shareable, and storable file sizes
TIFF: (Tagged Image File Format) A high-quality image format. It preserves image details without loss of quality, even when heavily edited
BMP: A graphics format developed by Microsoft to store digital images pixel by pixel without compression
What type is best for you?
Portable / Compact Scanners:
For: Remote workers, travelling, occasional use or users with tight desk space
PROS: Small Form Factor, Lightweight, USB or battery-powered, fits into a laptop bag.or dedicated travel case.
CONS: Limited speed and ADF feeders. Not ideal for bulk scanning. Features like Duplex not available on some models.
A4 Flatbed:
For: Digitising delicate photos, fragile, bound books, and irregularly shaped items or occasional use
PROS: Safely scan delicate items, Lightweight, Usually provide higher optical resolutions, No risk of paper jams.
CONS: Limited speed. Not ideal for bulk scanning. Features like Duplex not available. Limited to A4 or smaller
A4 Desktop ADF / Sheet-Fed Scanner:
For: SOHO users, Office Environments, Reliable day to day scanning.
PROS: Faster Speeds and Larger ADF than Portable scanners. Scan small to medium size batches of A4 paper or smaller. Advanced features and connectivity.
CONS: Upfront cost, Space Requirements, Limited to A4 Paper or smaller. Requires periodic maintenance to keep scanner optimal.
A3 Flatbed:
For: Digitising delicate photos, fragile, larger bound books, and larger irregularly shaped items or occasional use
PROS: Safely scan delicate items, Scan larger documents than A4 flatbeds, Usually provide higher optical resolutions, No risk of paper jams.
CONS: Limited speed. Not ideal for bulk scanning. Space Requirements, Features like Duplex not available.
A3 Desktop ADF / Sheet-Fed Scanner:
For: Busy Office Environments, High day to day scanning. Larger format scanning
PROS: Typically Faster Speeds and Larger ADF than A4 scanners. Scan medium to large size batches of A3 paper or smaller. A4 paper can be fed landscape for faster throughput. Advanced features and connectivity.
CONS: High upfront cost, Space Requirements, Requires periodic maintenance to keep scanner optimal.
A3 Production Scanner:
For: Heavy duty office Environments, Bureaus, Post Rooms. Larger format scanning
PROS: Highest Scan Speeds and ADFs. Built for continuous, heavy-duty use, routinely handling 30,000 to 100,000+ scans per day, Advanced Paper Feeding, Scan medium to very large size batches of A3 paper or smaller. A4 paper can be fed landscape for faster throughput. Advanced features and connectivity.
CONS: Very High upfront cost, Space Requirements, Requires periodic maintenance and regular replacement of consumables like feed rollers and separation pads to keep scanner optimal.
Overhead / Book Scanner:
For: Digitising delicate photos, fragile, larger bound books, and larger irregularly shaped items or occasional use
PROS: Safely scan delicate items, Faster scanning than most flatbeds, Scan larger documents than A4 flatbeds, No risk of paper jams.
CONS: Lower resolution than most flatbed units, Not ideal for bulk scanning. Features like Duplex not available. Ambient light can negatively affect the consistency of the scans
TWAIN: An open-source application programming interface (API) that allows capture software (like Kodak Capture Pro) to communicate directly with the scanner. This is the most common driver used by consumers. TWAIN provides normal, standard control.
ISIS: (Image and Scanner Interface Specification) A proprietary driver optimised for high-speed, enterprise-level document production. ISIS provides deep control over advanced hardware features.
WIA (Windows Image Acquisition) It is a proprietary driver and protocol developed by Microsoft that allows graphics software (like Windows Fax and Scan, Adobe Photoshop, or MS Paint) to communicate with scanners and digital cameras
